Hamilton to Iceland and other European destinations on PLAY - ~$425 to $625 CAD roundtrip
14
August
PLAY Airlines offers relatively cheap flights from Hamilton to Reykjavik, Iceland.
You may recall the now defunct WOW Air, the low cost airline that used to operate between Toronto and Iceland. PLAY is essentially the same model.
Base fares generally start at around $350-$375 CAD roundtrip.
NOTE: Most of PLAY's best deals are currently focused on November 2024 travel.
The base fare only includes a small personal item.
Carry-on bags are $105 roundtrip. (Now $158 roundtrip?)
Checked bags are $122 roundtrip. (Now $185 roundtrip?)
Seat selection is $16 to $80 roundtrip.
So yeah, watch all those fees before deciding if it's a good deal. The most direct comparison would be to Icelandair's Toronto-Reykjavik flights, which are typically priced in the high $600s to low $700s roundtrip with carry-on.
The other thing to factor in is the cost of parking at Hamilton airport which can be $150 / week and quickly erode any potential savings.
PLAY recently announced that they would be offering free stopovers in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Connecting flights to other places in Europe
You can also find flights from Hamilton to 35 different destinations in Europe, with 1 stop in Reykjavik each way.
You can find base fares from Hamilton to Europe in the mid-$400s roundtrip.
But the bag fees for connecting flights to Europe are higher (~$180 roundtrip for carry-on, and $250+ roundtrip for a checked bag!!).
So realistically, it's around $600-$650 roundtrip for a 1-stop flight to Europe with carry-on. Not an amazing price, but it can be $200-$400 cheaper than other airlines, depending on the destination.
And the layover times range from great to terrible, so watch for that as well.

I don't think seat selection is mandatory. Just booked through play to KEF in September and did not make any seat selection.
I booked to Bologna Italy.. cheapest seat assignment was $7 at very back of plane. Didnt look like it was mandatory
Thanks DJ & Geoff - you're right, it's not mandatory.
